A Journey To Remember

It was the end of summer 2003. We, four of us, decided to make a roadtrip from Minneapolis to Vancouver through Seattle and Victoria BC. It was a journey to be remembered. 36 hours of driving just to reach the sea. Picture above was taken somewhere in Montana.

We reached Seattle on a hot afternoon, after spending the night camping at Olympic National Park. Top picture is Fazrul spotted at Seattle Pike Place Market, famously trading since 1907. Bottom picture is aerial view from the Space Needle, the tower which is excessively potrayed in TV series Grey's Anatomy.

Upon reaching Victoria BC, we decided to hunt for some whales. Though the results was futile, we learnt the invaluable experience--not to trust everything Lonely Planet says. Picture above is Fazrul and me getting ready for the ride. There is also an awesome foodstall on the corner.

On the return journey, the challenges dragged on. Our car, a 1995 Honda, broke down because of multiple failures. We stranded in a vague town, in the prairie state, Wyoming, for one night. Picture above is me, waiting for the workshop to open in the early morning.

D90 'Unboxing' Video!

My 'unbox' test film using D90. All shots are taken within 24-hr out of the box. Lenses used are 50mm 1.8 and 18-105mm.

Opinions/observations:
1. Good 24fps rate. Very cinematic-like with max. res. of 720p. Mpeg4 format.
2. No auto-focus while recording. Bluergh.
3. Keeping the shots steady can be challenging. Tripod is key.
4. Some 'banding' can be observed under artificial light. But can use AE-Lock function to reduce flickering.
5. Built-in mono audio recording. Bummer.

Hello. I am at work pumping some productive hours on a Tuesday afternoon.

OK, I'm lying. I am reading an online article about personal hygiene at The Star TWO - Total Women Online website (don't ask me how did I get there).

Anyways it was revealed that only 44% of Malaysians actually shower before going to bed. Surprising? Meh, I am certainly not. Because I don't shower before I go to bed. I think it's a waste of resources to spend extra time in the shower after work. And of course, my body smells great all the time because obviously I am a superhuman.

But I don't know about you though. I take the Putra LRT everyday and I gotta tell ya, everybody else needs a shower right after work before they take the Putra home. YOU ALL STINK!

'Brain decline' begins at age 27

Mental powers start to dwindle at 27 after peaking at 22, marking the start of old age, US research suggests.

Professor Timothy Salthouse of the University of Virginia found reasoning, spatial visualisation and speed of thought all decline in our late 20s.

Therapies designed to stall or reverse the ageing process may need to start much earlier, he said.

His seven-year study of 2,000 healthy people aged 18-60 is published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging.

To test mental agility, the study participants had to solve puzzles, recall words and story details and spot patterns in letters and symbols.

The same tests are already used by doctors to spot signs of dementia.

In nine out of 12 tests the average age at which the top performance was achieved was 22.

The first age at which there was any marked decline was at 27 in tests of brain speed, reasoning and visual puzzle-solving ability.

Things like memory stayed intact until the age of 37, on average, while abilities based on accumulated knowledge, such as performance on tests of vocabulary or general information, increased until the age of 60.

Professor Salthouse said his findings suggested "some aspects of age-related cognitive decline begin in healthy, educated adults when they are in their 20s and 30s."

Rebecca Wood of the Alzheimer's Research Trust agreed, saying: "This research suggests that the natural decline of some of our mental abilities as we age starts much earlier than some of us might expect - in our 20s and 30s.

"Understanding more about how healthy brains decline could help us understand what goes wrong in serious diseases like Alzheimer's.

"Alzheimer's is not a natural part of getting old; it is a physical disease that kills brain cells, affecting tens of thousands of under 65s too.

"Much more research is urgently needed if we are to offer hope to the 700,000 people in the UK who live with dementia, a currently incurable condition."

Been reading an article about current Malaysia economies, quote

Got hit by a car at Batu Gajah, Perak on the way to drop my sister at UTP.

It happened on a 4-lane road. There were two cars ahead of me. According to them, there was a car in front trying to make an illegal u-turn and they had to brake. I did the same, but a car behind me kissed my butt.

The car was a Mercedes Benz C200 Model 1999 and mine is Proton Satria Neo Model 2006.

Luckily no one was injured.

Traffic lights

Yesterday I drove 70km on a straight road passing roughly 25 traffic lights and most of them were red. It got me thinking, what is the possibility for me to go through all of them green?
So on the way back, I maintained nominal speed of 90km/hr to see if maybe I would pass more green lights. It only got worse. I only saw more red.

Is it fate, probability, causality or just pure choice?

Can the system be governed? I think it is just a matter of synchronization, interface and simple physics (and some budget). So yes, I think the system can be controlled.

To think that engineers are busy cracking up quantum mechanics. We can't even set a simple velocity-based timer traffic lights in Malaysia.

Or is it up to town-planners?

At first it all seems possible.
B1 conditon: must be a replacement.
B2 condition: handing over must be at least a month.

Then a replacement came. A month passed by.
B1 condition: replacement must be experienced, not fresh-grad.
B2 condition: handing over must be at least six months.

And now, as if I wasn't baffled enough already, HR called back my replacement cos they can't afford to wait six months. My transfer status? Indefinite hold.

Unfuckingbelievable.

There were some suggestions of using biofuel and wood pellets for power generations. Look, I know what you're thinking. It could save fuel cost and minimize dependency on oil and coal. But I must say as promising as it sounds, my verdict stands: BULLSHIT.

Why? Because plantations and crops are good for one thing, FOOD. Don't even think of disrupting the balance because food is already scarce as it is. Ever heard of Thomas Malthus' Principle of Population? That's right morons. Population growth versus food-production gap is not getting any narrower and electricity demand is not going south either. It's a scary shit graph if you asked me.

So tell me, what do you wanna eat 50 years from now? Petroleum flavored ice-cream? McCoal value meals?

And above all, if the 90%-10% coal-wood mixing plan really fly (at least at management level), that would spell more work for me. Come on now folks, technically speaking, we gonna need new sets of crusher, mill, belt-scale & conveyor system to boot. They are not even sure if the boilers can burn well without slagging. So let's forget about it. Bokay?

And stop listening to them politicians.

I like the way they put this into perspective. Speaking of which, the price of coal is reaching record high of USD100/ton and still going up. This is really bad news for Malaysia because a) we import coal and b) more than 30% of our electricity generated from coal. Worse, Tenaga is the one whose absorbing this inflation because of its inability to control the tariff. And worst, there goes my bonus for this year.

Two words: Conserve, bitches!

But that's the environmentalist/conservationist/traditionalist side of me speaking. I bet Lisa agrees. Truth is, if I had it my way, my advice would be this:

SPLURGE GODDAMMIT! TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS 24/7!

Yeah that's right. I said it. Why? Because we are already generating electricity at 30-40% surplus. More usage from consumers means more revenue for Tenaga, hence more bucks for me. So go on and use all your blenders, air-conds, and what have you like there's no tomorrow.
